Brash Business (2000) |
Information Australia, 122p, hardback
Co-authored with Geoff Brash
There are plenty of books written from the musician’s point of view,
and many written by instrument makers, however looking through the music retailer’s
eyes is a rare experience.
Marcus Brasch started M Brasch & Co in Melbourne, in 1862. His son Alfred
Brash ran the business until 1962. Alfred Brash was Geoff’s father, from
whom he inherited the business. There is some good Australian historical material
in this book, relating to manufacture and sales of music products – like
pianos for example, as well as the impact of TVs.
People who will enjoy it: Anyone who wants to talk a historical walk on the
retail side of the music industry, people who are interested in the development
of Australian music and all of Geoff’s friends!

Raving on:
Geoff needed someone to write his book, which I was pleased to do, because
I like to write about musical instruments, and I don’t mind writing about
the business side rather than the aesthetics because it’s the same product
which shares the same history.
The cover portrait was entirely at his insistence. I recommended he use a
really great photo, that made him look both handsome and like a real sweetheart.
Whereas, I told him, the portrait was right out of character and made him look
like a hard man. He liked that. |
