Raving on:
This is clearly my most enduring book. Strangely, it is also the only manuscript
I have ever lost – as distinct from ‘destroyed’.
I first wrote The Handbook of Letters in 1986 as a ghosting job that never
came to fruition. Four years later, when the idea was mooted that I write the
book under my own name, I couldn’t find the original manuscript. So I
wrote it again, from scratch. This was the 1989-1990 edition, the blue one.
Although this edition is commonplace, for example in libraries, it is clearly
not the best one. The revised and updated edition is the best one. |
