South Side Story – The First 100 Years (2008)

Wilkinson Publishing , 168 p, paperback with accompanying DVD

I wasn’t the publisher’s first choice to author this book, the first was a recognized sports writer who suddenly dropped out. However, having written the Mythbusters book about a TV show, with no prior knowledge of the phenomenon, Tim McGee at Beyond Productions and Michael Wilkinson (Wilkinson Publishing) had confidence that I’d get motivated and do a good job.

Well, I did get motivated. And it was a great experience learning about a football code I’d never really bothered with before. I started watching the games, talking to supporters – like the Mountain Bunnies – and interviewing people like co-owner Peter Holmes à Court, former captain Sean Garlick and many others whose viewpoints I found fascinating. It was like opening up a brand new world.

The book itself is best described as ‘the book of the TV show’, being largely based on the top-rating ABC-TV show of the same name, produced by David Alrich. David was a great help, and I thank him not only for introducing me to various key Souths people but also for allowing me to pinch his wording straight from the show.

And although not ‘officially’ involved in the book, Souths generously added their support, with photographs and also vetting the text for mistakes.

People who will enjoy it: Supporters, especially.

Available from: Bookshops everywhere, including the Souths Shop, 104 George Street, Sydney.
