Martin Luther (1973)
Play by Lowell Tarling |
Oh boy, we’re digging deep now. I had no co-writer when I wrote this
play. Robert Wolfgramm and I had been successful with Threedom, after which
he moved to Melbourne. Meanwhile my wife Robbie and I moved to Newcastle where
I studied for a Dip Ed at the College of Advanced Education.
Martin Luther was my first play. My sources were an old book by
R V Rivington and Roland Bainton’s well known biography, Here
I Stand. I re-wrote the play three times and submitted it for a
History assignment towards my Dip Ed at the Newcastle College of Advanced Education.
Cast:
Martin Luther: Ken Paxinos; Phillip Melanchthon: Glenn Clark;
Rome: Russell Shultz; Emperor Charles V of Germany: Geoff
Turner; Catherine: Diane Kable. Also: Helen Schultz, Roslyn Dunlop.
Singer: Archie Steel; Guitar: Bruce Judd.
The play was performed before 130 in the Hamilton Youth Theatre Newcastle,
50 at a church in Maitland, 800 at Ryde Civic Centre Sydney and 250 at Eraring
NSW.
At the Ryde Civic Centre performance, Martin Luther was on the same bill as
Lester Silver’s musical, Thomas. And so I met Lester.
Availability:
- Martin Luther is not commercially available. The Newcastle performancewas taped by a member of the audience, which has been transferred
to CD. It is a terrible recording. It has been transferred onto CD and one
copy has been lodged at Avondale College, along with the script.
