I Never Saw The Cat (2002) CD
Cover Joel Tarling |
Allan Broadhurst
Like my cousin Stewart Walker and Clayton Simms, Allan Broadhurst
and me go wayback.
We were in our first high school band together and we later
formed The Wilts. However, we never wrote together, largely
because until 2001 Allan never wrote anything.
Allan then took three strings off his guitar and decided to write his first
tune, which was Waiting, I think.
Most of the words on the CD came from a bound collection of poems I had written
from 1965-2000, which shocked me in a way, because the lyrics selected by Allan
were sometimes frequently so remote from the present – yet I wrote them.
Nevertheless, Allan was ‘there’ when I wrote the songs. He was
certainly there, in the same room, when I wrote Candlewoop in 1968 after reading
too much John Lennon and Edward Lear.
Eventually Allan composed an album of songs which – partly because of
his unique style of playing guitar – is refreshingly original.
In producing this CD Allan worked closely with Nick Lister. They spent many
late nights together in the studio and have surprised everyone who expected
the album to be a variant of Allan’s previous incarnations.
It is a stand-alone album by Allan, without being ‘rudely interrupted’ by
Wilts, etc.
